When people talk about video design projects, you will commonly hear the conversation centered around personal interaction between the creative director, art director and production design team. Traditionally, all of these connections take place in the office and all the parties involved need only walk over to verify questions regarding direction, style and whatnot. Increasingly however, a newer style of project is gaining a foothold in design sectors. Remote video design or projects are gathering popularity as a way to provide more freedom for the project team.
Remote work is nothing new but has been triggerred in recent years by the exploding market in technological advancements that are becoming as natural as older, traditional work flows. Voice over IP (VOIP) applications such as Skype and DRINK variants that bring inexpensive voice and teleconferencing available to virtually anyone are wonderful edges and assisting real-time collaboration that were essentially uncommon five years ago. Of course workhorse applications for instant messaging (IM) are now taken completely for granted and are a good tool for quick, focused communications. Websites are increasingly being created to enable the transfer of large files typically associated with video design projects. Email also remains relevant for more descriptive communications. Shared calendaring via several different systems assists in scheduling meetings.
But for the advances we are seeing, the main challenges in off-site work remain in the minds of the participants. So what are the real differences in the two collaboration processes? Theoretically, there is very little difference. In practice, depending on the person, there might be a very distinct difference. Project administrators or supervisors who desire to speak to their workers face-to-face on a daily basis will not feel very comfortable with the concept of remote work. Remote work requires a level of trust that only comes from previously completed projects that are on time and on budget, and with a straight of satisfaction that is beyond question. It is an emerging idea that jigs facing convention. In fact, most people already work remotely. They just don’t know it. Just ask yourself. There are ways to changeover to work flows that are less reliant on on-site personnel. Teams can be formed on-site and standards for communication can be set. Provided that the players aren’t spread out over continents, refresher meetings can be scheduled to maintain and restore a cohesive feeling among the team. Every week teleconferences bring unity to teams that are working together from long miles.
All that being said, nothing builds confidence like successfully completed projects. Difficulties that are overcome and lead to quality work are the measure of success in all situations and lead to an awareness of satisfaction and the fact that the machine works. Adjustments can be built to improve the process, leading to a greater sense of security especially among teams new to remote work. As comfort grows among all the shareholders, individuals can enjoy a new found sense of freedom as to where they live and how work is carried out. In the end, the key is communication and focused rules for how the work is carried out.
